Want to Spoil Your Cat? Create a Catio!

Do you have a kitty? If so, your feline friend probably has a way of melting your heart with her adorable antics, cute meows, and loving purrs. Cats have been domesticated for roughly 30,000 years, which probably means that they’ve had us wrapped around their paws for 29,999 years and eleven months. Of course, these sweet, lovable furballs make wonderful pets and companions, so it’s no wonder that we like to spoil them a bit. One way you can pamper your feline friend is to turn your patio or spare room into a catio. A local Lafayette, LA vet discusses creating a kitty haven in this article.

Why A Catio?

Kitties are much safer indoors, where they are protected from the dangers posed by cars, weather, predators, and other hazards. Cats that are allowed outdoors are also at much greater risk of contracting dangerous (and disgusting) parasites, or getting lost, hurt, or even killed. If Fluffy enjoys going outside, offering her a catio will allow her to get a taste of nature, while staying safe and sound inside.

Furnishing Fluffy’s Haven

You don’t have to relinquish an entire room to your feline overlord. Just offer Fluffy some things of her own. Cat towers are very beneficial, because they offer kitties a scratching post, lounging spot, jungle gym, and a high vantage point. To really pamper your furball, put a cat tower in front of a window with a good view. That way, Fluffy will be able to lounge about, nap, watch birds and squirrels, and daydream about hunting, all in one spot. You can also add kitty hammocks, pet tents, cat tunnels, and/or kitty condos. Or, to keep it simple, just add some boxes and comfy pet beds.

No catio is complete without plenty of fun kitty toys. Place some cat-safe plants at floor level, so your feline buddy can look through the leaves and pretend she’s stalking her prey (that would be you). Some other things you can add include kitty fountains, cat grass, and, of course, catnip. Kitties love to sunbathe, so you’ll get bonus purrs if Fluffy’s catio has sunbeams. Of course, if you really want to go all out, build a catwalk for your furry little diva.
