Feline Obesity

Did you know that, according to some estimates, well over half of our feline friends are obese or overweight? Is your pet among them? While we can’t deny that chubby cats are cute, those extra pounds can seriously endanger your kitty’s health and well-being. A local Lafayette, LA vet discusses feline obesity in this article.

Causes Of Obesity

Fluffy’s diet plays a huge role in determining her overall weight. Give your furball the best food you can afford, but don’t overfeed her: just giving your kitty a few extra calories a day can make her pack on the pounds. Kitties that only get kibble may be more prone to gaining weight than cats that get wet food. This is because many dry food formulas, especially lower-quality ones, are very high in carbs. Ask your vet for specific nutritional recommendations, including portion sizes and suitable treats.

As one might expect, Fluffy’s fondness for napping isn’t exactly helping her waistline. Keep your furball active by offering her lots of fun toys and taking time to play with her daily. Even just spending a few minutes pouncing on a catnip mouse or chasing after a feather toy will be beneficial for your feline friend. We also recommend giving your kitty some cat furniture that promotes activity, such as a good cat tower.

Health Risks

Kitties that are overweight or obese face many different medical problems, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory issues, bone/joint problems, skin trouble, liver and kidney trouble, and even certain types of cancer. Fluffy is also more likely to have complications after surgery, or have trouble reproducing, if she is obese. Your beloved pet will be much healthier if she stays at or near her ideal weight!

Helping Your Furball Trim Down

If Fluffy is, well, not just fluffy, you may need to make some changes to your pudgy pet’s care regimen. Be sure to consult your vet before making any changes to your kitty’s diet. Just like people, cats have to slim down slowly in order to lose weight safely. Crash diets are just as bad for our feline friends as they are for us!
